What should you look for in a coding bootcamp?

Making the decision to change careers with a coding bootcamp is an exciting one, but it can be difficult to wade through the plethora of bootcamps and courses out there. A simple Google search for “Coding Bootcamp” yields over 14 million results. So how’s a soon-to-be coder supposed to know which one is the right fit?

To help choose the right program for you, here are some key questions to ask yourself before enrolling:

What coding languages do I want to learn?

There are over 700 coding languages, but don’t worry, you don't need to know all of them! An average programmer specializes in 2-4 coding languages, with many languages more popular and in-demand than others.

Some of the most common coding languages are HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Python. At Juno, we specialize in teaching these languages, and more, in our Web Development and Data Analytics Bootcamps.

Which learning style best suits me?

Whether it's lectures or practical assignments, fast or slow-paced, self-paced or live classes - it's important to choose a bootcamp with a structure and approach that best suits your learning style.

Before enrolling, research the types of assignments you’ll be completing, the amount of time you’ll be dedicating to coursework, and the professional background of the instructors leading the learning.

Joining one of Juno's free tech workshops or part-time courses is a great way to get to know Juno's instructors and teaching style before committing to our full-time Bootcamp! Our classrooms have a perfect blend of interactive learning and hands-on practice taught by industry experts.

How much am I willing to spend?

We all want the best possible value for our dollar, and shopping for a coding bootcamp is no exception. Depending on the structure and length of the bootcamp, prices have a vast range from $1,500 to $30,000.

It's worth noting that many low-cost Bootcamps are self-paced, with pre-recorded/asynchronous lessons that are spread out over a long time. Everyone's learning style is different, but it's important to keep this in mind if you're eager to learn alongside a community, and not be out of the workforce for too long!

Financing options are different depending on the company or school offering the course. At Juno, students are provided with a variety of flexible options, including upfront tuition, Income Share Agreements, scholarships, or Financeit loans.

What are my professional goals?

Whether you have eyes on joining a specific company or are looking to start your own business, you’ll want to consider your professional goals when researching coding bootcamps.

Taking a look at bootcamp graduates, their job titles, and the companies they're working at will give you an idea about what you could expect for your career after graduation. You can also browse junior job postings and the skills required, and see if they line up with the bootcamp you're considering.

You'll also want to look at the kind of career support offered to students. At Juno, Bootcamp students have access to our supportive alumni community for mentorship, as well as their own dedicated career coach to help them on their job search journey. This includes one-on-one guidance such as personalized resume and cover letter feedback, interview prep training, support with contract/salary negotiation, and more.

What are students saying?

Often your best source of information is students who have taken and completed the bootcamp. What they like and dislike about the program may vary by student, so it’s best to read a variety of reviews on the school's website and review sites such as CourseReport, CourseCompare, and Google. Reaching out to graduates of the bootcamp through LinkedIn or Twitter may also provide further insight into what to expect.
