Why Shanel Beebe chose Juno College
Shanel first heard of Juno through Juno College’s partnership with Miziwe Biik Aboriginal Employment & Training Center.
Founded in 1991, Miziwe Biik's goal is to meet the unique training and employment needs of the Indigenous community, by providing training initiatives and employment services in Toronto. Since Juno’s mission is to make a tech education more accessible to everyone, especially those underrepresented in the industry, working with Miziwe Biik was a no brainer!
Shanel had always found coding “intimidating but interesting,” so she learned some basic HTML and CSS from a free online course from Codecademy. “It wasn’t until I found Juno that I really got into coding,” she says.
“Another Indigenous mom that I knew recommended that I check out Miziwe Biik’s employment services,” says Shanel. She noticed that they were hosting an 8-week part-time Web Development course with Juno, and registered at the last minute.
“It was a wonderful experience,” says Shanel. “We got a lot of one-on-one time to ask questions and receive guidance. I immediately took to HTML and CSS and loved the process of building responsive web pages.”
The Juno College team was absolutely awesome. The teaching was excellent, and everyone was so supportive and encouraging.
Shanel’s lead instructor and her class mentor encouraged her to apply to Juno’s Web Development Bootcamp, a full-time program dedicated to helping people launch their careers as a web developer.
“I’m so glad they told me to apply,” says Shanel. “I found out just before the end of the Web Development course that I had been accepted to Bootcamp!”
“After taking Juno’s Web Development course with Miziwe Biik, there wasn’t really another option for me but to continue on with Juno. The first learning experience had gone so well, I didn’t see a point in checking out other schools. One of my favourite things about Juno is the strong sense of community. It really feels like everyone is rooting for everyone else to succeed.”
I’m so grateful that Miziwe Biik introduced me to Juno College. My entire career trajectory has changed thanks to the courses I took at Juno.
Shanel dove right into Juno’s intensive Bootcamp program, spending her time learning how to build websites with in-demand coding skills such as HTML5, CSS3, responsive design, JavaScript, jQuery, and more. She also gained valuable experience with paired programming projects and working with teams in a remote setting, and was inspired by her peers.
“I’ve found a lot of inspiration from my fellow classmates at Juno. Just seeing what they’re capable of after a relatively short time learning web development has blown my mind. I loved seeing their projects during Bootcamp and I’m so excited to hear about their achievements post-Bootcamp!”
After lots of hard work, Shanel graduated from Juno’s Bootcamp in May 2021, and was ready to kick off her job search.
