Ready to shine at your new job?

Whether you're looking to pass your probation period or simply start off strong, we asked our Director of Career Services Chi-Chi Egbo to share her tips to succeeding in the first 3 months of your new job - including a free downloadable template for your own 30-60-90 Day Plan!

Step 1: Meet Your Manager

Get to know your manager! This is the perfect time to get a better understanding of your responsibilities, who you’ll be collaborating with, and expectations for your performance in your first week, month, 3 months, and so on. It’s also a good idea to ask more questions about the company’s vision and goals!

Step 2: Build A Plan

Use the information you gathered in your meeting with your manager to make a 30-60-90 Day Plan: a handy document summarizing your intentions and priorities for your first 30 days, 60 days, and 90 days at your new job. Build your plan around actionable one-month goals to track your progress.

Step 3: Make Your Plan SMART

Make your 30-60-90 Day Plan actionable by adding goals that are SMART:

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Achievable
  • Realistic
  • Time-bound

Set 2-3 goals for each month. Here’s an example of goals for your first month:

  • Complete three training modules by the end of my second week
  • Discover efficient ways to complete tasks by shadowing two teammates
  • Schedule a coffee chat with at least one teammate

Step 4: Assess and Reflect

You’ve hit the 90-day mark of your new job - yahoo! Now it’s time to assess your progress and reflect on your first three months. Take the time to recognize your successes, your strengths, and what you enjoy about your new job and company.

For goals you did not meet, determine the barriers that prevented you from reaching them. You can use your reflection to set new goals for the following month. You don’t need to build another 30-60-90 Day Plan, but it’s a good idea to set at least one new goal every month in the first 12 months.

Step 5: Celebrate!

Congratulations! You’ve survived and thrived during the first 3 months of your new job, completed your goals, and increased your confidence. Remember to celebrate your successes, because you deserve it!
