Ever wondered what it takes to become a successful developer?

Web developers are in-demand and highly sought after, because of their ability to engage in creative problem solving and convert ideas into reality. And while writing code and possessing technical skills is essential for every developer, the right blend of personal and professional daily habits is also an important key to success.

Check out this list of 8 habits that are sure to have a positive impact on your success as a developer:

Write Clean and Readable Code

At the top of this list is writing clean, readable, and reusable code. Developing this habit has the potential to drive your success as a developer in the tech industry and it will make your work even more valuable. Since technology is always changing, there will always be instances where your code needs to be updated or tweaked. Readable code is easier to maintain and in the future others can easily jump in to make changes to the code whenever needed!

Be a Lifelong Learner

The web development industry is always evolving and staying up-to-date with new technologies and trends is a great habit to form to keep your skillset relevant. Upskilling is a great way to add to your portfolio and build on your current skills, while learning new programming languages and tools. Trying new things and being open-minded to different approaches is one of the most powerful habits of a successful developer. Don’t be afraid to fail and learn from your experiences! Plus, staying on-top of industry trends and exploring various aspects of technology allows developers to continuously find new strategies and ways to apply their knowledge.

Practice Discipline

Understanding deadlines, prioritizing your day-to-day schedule, and establishing goals for yourself are key success factors for every developer. Skilled developers will often start with analyzing the core goal of a project and establish their working process based on that in order to stay on track. Try using free planning tools like Notion to keep yourself organized and plan out your day along with scheduled breaks. At Juno, mental health and taking breaks is a priority and our instructors make a point to teach students about this in lessons.

Focus on the End Goal

Successful developers will focus on a project with the end in mind, in order to make sure they’re hitting the right targets along the way. This can look like breaking one long page you’re working on into sections and organizing the project into subtasks with deadlines. This habit will help you put together a productive workflow plan and set guiding goals for yourself throughout a project that will set you up for success!

Understand the Business Needs

Skilled web developers understand that their work reflects the needs and opportunities of the business. Practicing creative problem solving and ideation is a habit that successful developers work on to continuously improve their workflow to generate effective results for the business. This will not only help make you a valuable member of your team, but it will also align your work to a bigger picture and give you a deeper appreciation for the work you’re doing.

Communicate Regularly

Effective and regular communication are a crucial part of every team, and it’s even more essential to your success as a developer. Communicating roadblocks and struggles that may be getting in the way of your work early on will solve problems more productively. It’s also a good habit to regularly express positive feedback and news with your team to encourage open communication and build team trust.

Own your Expertise

It’s impossible to know it all, but it is possible to pick up a skill and own it confidently. Successful developers are aware of their abilities and understand how to best contribute and apply their knowledge to drive success within a project. This can look like mastering a certain programming language or understanding a certain tool thoroughly.
