Looking to make the most of your online class?

Online learning has been more popular than ever since the pandemic, and shows no signs of slowing! You likely know the benefits of online learning by now — sleep in, skip transit delays, learn in your PJs, and so on. But if you're used to learning in-person, learning online may take some adjusting.

Whether you're learning French, Photoshop, or how to code, how can you make sure you're getting the best learning experience possible from your online course? Here are some tips to succeed in your online classes!

1. Treat online learning like in-person learning

The key to success for online learning is to approach it like you’re attending class in-person. If your online course is asynchronous/pre-recorded, create a schedule for your learning (more on this in the next tip!) and take notes. If your class is offered live online, make sure to "arrive" on time to each class, take notes, and actively participate by asking your instructors questions or interacting with your fellow classmates.

2. Establish a routine

Setting a routine early on in your online course will help you stay organized. Do you work best in the evening, or early in the morning? What study style works best for you? When can you schedule in breaks, and other commitments? To get started, enter all class times and due dates in your calendar, and make sure to block off time each week to work on your assignments or study. This will help you visualize where class and classwork fits into your schedule, and help you stick to your routine.

3. Set up your space

While online learning means you can learn from anywhere you'd like, it's still important to set up your environment for success. Make sure you have a setup that's comfortable and distraction-free for your learning style, whether that means a home office, a coworking space, a library, or a coffee shop. This dedicated learning space will not only increase your focus and productivity, but it'll achieve a better school-life balance. You may also want to invest in some office upgrades such as a proper desk chair, an external monitor, or some headphones, depending on your learning style and setup.

4. Take the time to network

Your classmates and instructors may be little profile pictures or videos during class, but online learning doesn't mean you can't still have meaningful connections! Take the time to learn more about your fellow peers over icebreakers or one-on-one chats — you could even organize a coffee chat online or offline! Some courses will even offer tools designed specifically for online networking or support, such as Juno’s Alumni Slack channel. This virtual community, available to anyone enrolled at Juno, allows students to connect with thousands of industry professionals in tech.

5. Tap into those handy resources

Just because you aren't physically on campus doesn't mean you can't benefit from the resources available to you as a student. Make sure to take the time to research what resources your school offers for students, and take advantage of any perks that catch your attention and could assist you post-graduation. Some of Juno's many perks include 1:1 mentorship for students during office hours, virtual mental health support, student discounts on certain services/subscriptions, and more!
