Wishing you could flex your creativity more at your job? Emma Harris felt the same - then she found Juno's Web Development Immersive Bootcamp.

Before breaking into tech, Emma was 25 and working in banking as an account manager, helping with the daily banking needs of customers. She was also creating a financial literacy initiative to help young women in Alberta.

While she enjoyed her work, she knew she wanted a change. She had previously gone to Sheridan College for Visual and Creative Arts, and was missing getting in touch with her creative side.

“I felt a bit lost in the financial industry,” she admits.

When Emma had to build a website for work, she didn't have the resources to pay a web developer to do it - so she began looking at online coding courses to teach herself. Soon enough, she enrolled in a part-time coding course at Juno (then known as HackerYou), and was instantly pulled into the wonderful world of web development!

I knew more flexibility and autonomy was what I wanted in my work, and that web development and web design would help me get there.

Months later, Juno launched their first full-time Bootcamp program, designed specifically for those looking to launch careers as web developers, fast. Emma knew right away this was what she was looking for - she applied and was accepted into Juno's first-ever cohort!

"I learn and advance better with practical experience, learning as I implement and iterate, so the Juno program was great for my learning style," says Emma. "I enjoyed the relaxed learning environment and the people the most. I’m still very close with a few people from my cohort."

The program allowed me to completely shift career paths without having to go to school for 2-4 years.

Throughout the nine weeks of Bootcamp, Emma coded web projects from scratch and got to flex her design skills at the same time. She knew exactly what she wanted to do once she graduated: build a small agency and be her own boss.

And she did just that! After working a few years as a freelance web designer and web developer, Emma founded Rhubarb, which later became Banan Creative.

Advantages of running your own business

There are many perks of working as a freelancer and running your own business:

  • you can choose to work on projects you're passionate about
  • you can work remotely wherever you'd like - whether an office, your home, a cafe, or a hotel
  • you can set your own flexible schedule
  • you have control over the growth of both your business and your role

After two years of focusing on web design and development, Emma saw a new opportunity for Banan Creative: marketing. She realized that the agency already had a deep understanding of how to market their clients' products and services, since they were working so closely with them during the web design and web development processes. Adding digital marketing and content creation to the agency's services also helped move them from a project-based structure to recurring retainer revenue.

As Creative Director, Emma oversees all of the creative and marketing strategy for their clients.

"This role better allows me to use my core strength, which is building deep and trusting relationships with our clients - some of whom we’ve worked with since day one," she says.

The agency focused on the natural and organic food industry early on, and it remains the core industry that they work with today. Some notable projects include marketing, content, and/or mobile app design for Way of Will, Pilsner Urquell, and Blissco Cannabis.

"I love to plan the big picture for our clients' work and manage how that comes to life!" says Emma.

Of course, no journey is without its challenges - the biggest one for Emma was learning how to be a leader who’s more introverted - and it is possible!

“My natural way is to be quiet and I think inward,” she says. “Having to push myself out of my comfort zone is still something I have to make a conscious effort to do each day in my work. It’s a good challenge for me.”

Tech is a perfect playground for lifelong learners! This is especially true for those like Emma in freelance or agency environments, as each project comes with its own unique challenges and lessons.

As for what inspires Emma in tech, it may inspire you, too!

“The simple ability to share things with others. We all have a desire to connect, and tech is a great tool for that when used responsibly. We use that inspiration to help our clients create and market the products they are passionate about.”

What's next for Emma and her business?

"In five years I want to continue working for myself in my own company and to be living a slower life," she says. "I will shift from product and service to impact and more strategy, but we’ll see what industry that takes form in. I’m in no rush. I want better, not bigger."
