We’re proud to announce that Juno College has officially become a Certified Living Wage Employer in Ontario — the first higher education institution in the province to do so!

This certification from the Ontario Living Wage Network is only one of the many ways we’re committing to creating a more equitable community through our internal policies and processes.

Learn more about the program and why it’s important to us:

What is the Ontario Living Wage Network?

The Ontario Living Wage Network is committed to changing the conversation about low wages in Ontario, by championing and showcasing the growing wave of living wage initiatives. They are a network of employers, employees, non-profits, researchers, and proponents of decent work standards for all Ontario workers.

Their living wage certification process involves an application review and license agreement, as well as a periodic review that ensures we're staying up-to-date with any new living wage calculations.

What is a living wage?

A living wage is not to be confused with the minimum wage, which is the legislated minimum that all employers must pay (e.g. the minimum wage in Ontario as of October 2022 is $15.50/hour).

According to the Ontario Living Wage Network, “a living wage reflects what people need to earn to cover the actual cost of living in their community.” This is calculated by drawing on data that is community-specific (e.g. the living wage in Toronto as of November 2022 is $23.15/hour).

What does this certification mean for Juno?

Being a certified Living Wage Employer means that our salaries have been adjusted and increased to cover the actual cost of living in Toronto.

While Juno is a digital-first company with team members across Canada, we are a Toronto-based company, and pay a Toronto living wage. As a people-first company, it’s important to us to make sure our team is not only earning a fair wage, but also one that will allow them to live comfortably, wherever they decide to live.

We will continue to make adjustments as the living wage is periodically reviewed by the Ontario Living Wage Network. As part of our commitment to being a living wage employer, Juno will be required to prove and recertify annually.

Why is this important to us?

As part of our new vision for 2022 and beyond, Juno is a people-first company, and a key part of this means ensuring we’re always doing what’s right for our team.

Becoming certified as a Living Wage Employer is a step further in the right direction when it comes to ensuring that everyone on our team is compensated fairly. By paying a living wage, we ensure that our team does not face financial stress, has a healthy work/life balance, and can focus on what matters most to them.

We’re excited to be part of the Ontario Living Wage Network, and hope to see more of our community joining us!
