The Opportunity

After working with Toronto-based Studio Function for more than five years, we are finally ready to bring design in-house at HackerYou. It’s an exciting time for us and an incredible opportunity for a talented and passionate designer to join our tight-knit all-star team! For this brand-new role at HackerYou, we’re looking for an experienced designer who’s passionate about two things: creating meaningful experiences through beautifully designed websites and applications, and sharing their passion, skills, knowledge and experience with others! In this role, you will lead design at HackerYou, which involves three major responsibilities: Pure Design Work: In this role, you’ll be responsible for the design and UX of HackerYou’s entire online presence as well as HackerYou’s product suite (apps we’ve developed in house that help us deliver a best-in-class experience for our students). We don’t do a lot of print, but in this role you’ll also be responsible for it - things like flyers, brochures, print ads, banners, etc. You’ll work with our six-person development team to turn your designs into reality and ensure pixel-perfect execution. Pure design work will be about 75% of this role. Leading HackerYou’s part-time design courses: Twice per year, you’ll take 30 students (mostly developers who want to learn design) through two part-time courses, Digital Design Fundamentals and Advanced Digital Design. In addition to delivering the courses and providing video feedback on student projects, you’ll make improvements to the course content, materials and overall student experience based on feedback and ensure the quality of the courses is always improving. Teaching will be about 15% of your role. Helping our students create beautiful projects: At HackerYou, we serve about 1000 students per year, most of whom don’t have design chops. To help them fall in love with the things they create, we want to provide them with design mentorship and guidance. This will be about 10% of your role.

About You

To succeed in this role, you should be comfortable with both web design, graphic design and web application design. Knowledge of HTML & CSS as well as UX would be beneficial, and experience designing high-performing landing pages would be a plus. The HackerYou visual identity is quite well-established, so you should generally like it, and also be able to work with it, evolving it as needed. You should have some opinions about the HackerYou website - things you like and things you don’t like, and then you should be comfortable seeking data to confirm or deny your findings . This role has a teaching component, so the right candidate will have experience teaching, speaking at conferences, leading meetings, or be ready to dive in head first.

Other Stuff You Should Know

We have a backlog of design and UX work that needs to be tackled, especially relating to our website, so your first few months with us will be busy with that. We’ll also get you trained on delivering our part-time design courses, through shadowing our current instructor, Linda Nakanishi, Associate Partner at Nascent Digital. Since we’re a small team, there is a ton of variety in this role and every role at HackerYou, and you’ll also have the chance to weigh in on HackerYou’s strategy and direction. This can be a great role for a designer who wants to learn more about business and entrepreneurship. This position reports to HackerYou’s CEO, Heather Payne.
