About the Position
After almost seven years growing almost entirely through word of mouth, we are ready to step it up in a big way in 2019. As CEO of HackerYou, I am seeking a talented marketer and strong manager (or someone overflowing with potential to be a strong manager) to join the HackerYou Leadership Team as our Director of Marketing.
In this role, you will be responsible for the marketing function at HackerYou. Currently, a talented Marketing Coordinator and a Designer run the show (and are doing an amazing job!) but they’re looking for leadership. We’re very active on social media, running paid advertisements on Facebook and Google and just replaced Mailchimp with Pardot. We have hundreds of five star reviews online and a very passionate and engaged alumni community. In the past two years, we’ve worked with No Fixed Address and Brainrider, both of whom helped us better understand our funnel and we’ve made lots of changes to our marketing tactics and website as a result. We use Salesforce and Pardot, so experience with CRM optimization and marketing automation is really important to us for this role. There is a direct connection between marketing activities and revenue growth at HackerYou, so someone obsessed with the funnel and helping our potential students move through it would be a good fit for our team. Over the past 6.5 years, we’ve grown rapidly on a small annual marketing budget - but now we’re ready to step on the gas.
We’re at the point where all we see is opportunity - and we need a leader to take the function by the reins and turn it into an engine that builds the HackerYou brand, delivers MQLs to the Admissions Team and significantly contributes to the Leadership Team by helping HackerYou move toward its big, hairy, audacious 10-year goal. Some of the stuff coming down the pipeline in 2019 includes a rebrand, massive renovations, expansion, new courses, new offerings for our existing community, new customer segments, and so much more. This is an incredibly exciting time to join the HackerYou team.
Reporting to me, HackerYou’s CEO and with two direct reports to support you (for now!), you will be a key member of HackerYou’s six-person Leadership Team. The team is a mix of home-grown talent (three of six leaders have been with HackerYou for more than two years) and new hires: both our CTO and Director of Operations have over fifteen years of experience in their fields. You’ll also be a key member of the broader HackerYou team, which will be 25-ish people as of January 2019. We’re a close-knit and passionate team, and it’s important to us that everyone who joins us fits with our core values: 1) We are welcoming, 2) We are collaborative & community-oriented, 3) We deliver a “Wow” experience, 4) We do what it takes, 5) We do what’s right, 6) We have fun! If those values resonate with you, please...read on!
This role is ideal for a marketer with significant experience, but I’ll leave it to you to share with me how your experience is relevant and has prepared you for this opportunity. We’re particularly excited about people who have experience with demand generation, sales funnel optimization & marketing automation. Your current title is probably Manager or Director, but if you’re with a smaller company, it could be VP or CMO. Our 10-year goal is so ambitious that we need the best of the best to join our team to help us make it happen!
Founded in 2012, HackerYou (also known as the HackerYou College of Technology, now that we’re a registered Private Career College) is a well-loved provider of hands-on, project-based training for people who want to learn to code or become professional developers! From our 12,000 square foot office in downtown Toronto, we run full-time and continuing education courses year-round. We also run workshops, corporate training events, and we rent out our office to external groups. With thousands of alumni and 1000+ students a year, there’s a large community of people ready to welcome you to HackerYou!
Self-funded, profitable from Day 1 and 100% owner-operated (no VC pressure here!), HackerYou is one of the most unique workplaces in Toronto, perhaps in Canada. We’re a team of about 25, which is the perfect size for people who want to have an area where they specialize, while also having impact on the other parts of the business. For a small business, we’re very organized (thanks, EOS!), but we’re still really different from IBM or Shopify, so someone who enjoys working for a large company or enterprise might not like it here. In terms of our future, we grow when we want to, how we want to, based on our ideas for how to better serve our community and for changing the world. Our team loves working here because the work we do makes people's’ lives better: we create learning environments that inspire, and help people get better jobs or change careers. Our customers thank us every single day - not too many companies out there can say something like that.
This is a full-time, permanent position beginning as soon as possible (but we’re flexible - it’s more important for us to find the right person than anything else!)
